Facebook could be getting ready to launch a music service called Vibes.
Engineer discovers name in code relating to video chat
Software engineer Jeff Rose investigated the code used by the social network's recently-announced video chat function and posted a piece of code to his Life Is a Graph blog. In the code, Peep, which is Facebook's video chat plug-in (although it has not retained this name) is referred to, but another app called Facebook Vibes is also mentioned.
"I searched around to see what this is all about, and it seems that this is an unannounced feature that has yet to be released," he said in the blog.
"The Vibes app connects with a music download dialogue in the page though, so I'm guessing that with this release we are seeing the seeds for Facebook's upcoming music offering."
Whether the service is a music-streaming offering in conjunction with an existing service, such as Spotify www.spotify.com , or a music downloads function, remains to be seen.
Facebook has yet to comment on the matter.
Last week, Facebook announced the highly anticipated video-chat function, which is being offered in partnership with Skype and means Facebook users will be able to make free video calls to Facebook friends.
