Centrica plugs into desktop services deal

BULLETIN: Contract with Fujitsu expands upon service desk provisioning

Centrica has signed a five year managed desktop services deal with Fujitsu.

The deal, which covers 25,000 IT users at the utility, expands a service desk agreement signed with Fujitsu last year.

Centrica said it was targeting better desktop performance for end users, as well as access to new e-mail and instant messaging systems.

The company will also use desktop applications on Fujitsu-hosted servers. The infrastructure is aimed at being more flexible and scalable, it said.

David Bickerton, chief information officer at Centrica, said the company's desktop services "increasingly involve adoption of mobile devices" and that it was vital this was addressed fully as part of the arrangement.

The news comes as Centrica business British Gas said it will speed up its smart meter rollout in order to meet its target of installing two million devices in homes and businesses by the end of 2012.
