Kids spend nearly two hours a day online

62% of 5 to 16 year olds have their own PC

Children spend an average of nearly two hours online every day, says Child Wise.

According to the research firm's annual monitor report, 62 percent of five to 16 year olds have their own PC, with nearly a quarter (24 percent) of those aged between five and six admitting to having their own computer.

More than two in five (46 percent) have net access in their room and nearly two thirds (65 percent) claim they surf the web most days. On average, kids use the web 5.2 times a week.

Seven in ten have their own mobile phone, with 97 percent of those aged 11 and above admitting to having their own handset. Furthermore, 65 percent of those aged 11 to 16 can access the web from their mobile phone and 43 percent claim the do this regularly.

More than a third (36 percent) of seven to 10 year had used the web to access social networking site Facebook in the week before the research was carried out, despite the minimum age for using the site being 13. Furthermore, 71 percent of 11 and 12 year olds and 85 percent of 13 to 16 year olds also admitted to visiting the social networking site in the week before the report was compiled.

More than four in five use 'on demand' TV services, with over half (51 percent) using the BBC iPlayer.

"We cannot complain as the generation in charge when they (children) use the things we have provided and don't have space to do recreational things outdoors with their parents," said Margaret Morrissey of Parents Outloud.
