Virgin Media rolls out 100Mbps to five more locations

Towns in Hertfordshire, Wales get superfast web

Virgin Media has revealed it will be rolling out its 100Mbps broadband service to a further five locations in the UK.

150,000 residents in Cheshunt and Hatfield in Hertfordshire, along with Pentwyn and in Treforest in Wales and Southport in Merseyside will join the 200,000 homes across the UK that already benefit from the superfast service, which was launched in October last year.

Virgin claims the service will allow users to download an entire music album in as little as five seconds, a TV show in around 30 seconds, a high quality movie in as little as 90 seconds and a high-definition movie in around seven minutes.

As well as achieving download speeds of 'up to' 100Mbps, users will also receive upload speeds of 'up to' 10Mbps along with a custom-built, energy-efficient, combined modem and wireless 'N' router, which has the potential to deliver speeds of up to 400Mbps as new services roll out in the future

"From establishing the UK's first ever broadband service to the launch of 100Mb just ten years later, Virgin Media has led the greatest developments in digital Britain," said Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media.

"We've invested many billions of private money in order to build a growing network that already passes approximately 13 million homes across the UK. We're racing to get these ultrafast speeds across this entire area as fast as we can to meet demand."

The 100Mbps service is priced at £35 a month as part of a bundle or £45 per month when purchased on its own.
