Liverpool residents to get 200Mbps net connections

Trial offers broadband via electricity cables

Liverpool residents are set to get access to 200Mbps broadband connections as part of a new trial.

The trial, which is being run by Scottish Power and Plus Dane Homes and will begin in March, will use PowerLine Communication (PLC) technology to offer internet access via electricity cables to around 1,000 homes in the area.

The trial will also see energy meters, which allow home owners to monitor the energy various devices in their home consume, rolled out to the 1,000 households.

"This is another option to deliver super-fast broadband without having to dig up streets," Mark Knowles from The Mersey Partnership told the Liverpool Daily Post.

However, while the technology is capable of delivering super-fast broadband in areas where ADSL or fibre networks have not yet been rolled out, it does require high levels of investment to ensure the network and infrastructure are in place. This means it may be no more viable when it comes to rolling out the service in rural areas.
