16% of Brits have downloaded a podcast

Nearly half use the function once a week

More than eight million Brits, that's 16 percent of UK's population, have downloaded a podcast.

According to figures from Rajar, the radio audience measurement firm, of these, 44 percent use function at least once a week and 30 percent say they now listen to radio programmes they would not normally listen to.

Nearly three quarters (77 percent) of those that had downloaded a podcast, listen at home while 50 percent said they listen when in the car or on public transport. The two most popular types of podcast were comedy and music.

More than a third (32 percent) of Brits have listened to internet radio, and a quarter said they've used listen-again services such as the BBC iPlayer.

Furthermore, 13 percent of Brits have listened to the radio on their mobile phone, 26 percent have downloaded a radio app to their handset, which is 57 percent up on the figures from May this year.

"Listening to radio via smartphones has grown rapidly over the past year or so and this is reflected in the number of people who claim to have downloaded a radio app, which now stands at just over a quarter of smartphone owners," said Rajar research manager, Christel Swift.
