World Cup is year's most discussed event on Facebook

X Factor finalists next most popular

The World Cup, which took place in South Africa this year, was the most mentioned event of the year in UK Facebook status updates.

Research by the social network revealed there were more than three million references to the football tournament this year.

X Factors stars Wagner and Cher were the next most popular topics mentioned in status updates, closely followed by Wayne Rooney, who hit headlines this year for his extra-marital activities and contract negotiations with current club Manchester United, and One Direction, who also appeared on the X Factor.

The World Cup was also the second most popular topic when it came to status updates for Facebook users across the world, being beaten only by HMU, a popular abbreviation for 'Hit Me Up' - another way of saying get in touch.

Movies, Apple's iPad and iPhone 4 and the earthquake in Haiti were also in the top five topics discussed in status updates across the world.
