Kent ISP trialling 100Mbps wireless broadband

VFast has upgraded existing technology

Residents in Kent are taking part in a trial of wireless broadband that is expected to offer speeds of 'up-to' 100Mbps.

VFast, which offers broadband services across the county, has upgraded its service available in Kings Hill, near Maidstone. VFast uses WiMAX-class wireless radio technology in areas where it's difficult to lay ADSL or fibre cables to provide internet access.

The service usually delivers download speeds of between 2Mbps and 10Mbps. Users need a small antenna installed on their property, which costs £99, to send and receive data.

"Kings Hill in West Malling Kent has received an upgrade to the VFast network after new fibres have been commissioned into the core and Airmax enabled on the wireless network," the company said.

Customers are seeing average download speeds above 30Mbps, with some being monitored exceeding 45Mbps."

The ISP revealed some web users had achieved downloads speeds of around 78Mbps, while theoretically speeds of up to 300Mbps are possible using the technology..

The service costs £24.99 per month.
