Online retailer Play.com is expecting 1,200 orders to be placed every minute on Monday December 6.
The first Monday in December, which is also dubbed 'Mega Monday' or 'Cyber Monday' is the traditionally the busiest online shopping day of the year, as thousands of Brits purchase the bulk of their gifts over the web.
The online retailer said the week between November 29 and December is likely to be its busiest of the year, with sales on 'Mega Monday' growing by 20 percent, compared to the first Monday of December in 2009.
Peak shopping times on Mega Monday will include 9am, after the school-run has been completed.
"Mega Monday is set to be our biggest sales day ever," said Stuart Rowe, chief operating officer of Play.com. However, Play.com predicts that rather than buying gifts during their lunch hour, office workers will instead wait until they get home and splash out at 9.30pm.
"We have seen Mega Monday grow year-on-year and we expect 2010 to continue this trend."
According to the IMRG (Interactive Media in Retail Group), a third of Brits claim they will spend less this Christmas than they did last year. However, with 28 percent saying they'll do more shopping online this year, the IMRG predicts £17.4bn will be spent online during Q4, that up on the £15bn spent during the same period last year.
"The internet has cemented its position as the place to go for value, convenience and choice, and continues to develop as a major factor in consumer culture in spite of the economic climate," added James Roper, chief executive at IMRG.
