53% of firms haven't checked their website's appearance on a mobile

Just 18% recognise mobile-friendly site could boost business

More than half (53 percent) of British businesses haven't checked what their website looks like when accessed via a mobile phone, says 1&1 Internet.

Research by the web hosting firm revealed that of those that have seen their website on a mobile device, 41 percent admit it has a reduced appearance, while 36 percent said it has reduced functionality compared to their main site.

Furthermore, 65 percent of firms said they don't optimise their website for mobile usage and have no plans to do so. Meanwhile, less than one in five (18 percent) recognise their sales or brand could be enhanced with a more mobile-friendly site as the adoption of mobile browsing continues to surge.

Only a quarter of firms have a map depicting their location on their website, while just 20 percent are listed in local business directories and two percent offer eCommerce functionality optimised for a mobile device.

"Many websites have not yet reached the Smartphone age. As a result, small firms in particular can miss a massive opportunity," said Oliver Mauss, CEO 1&1 Internet.

"Businesses must ensure that when their website is viewed on a mobile, it loads promptly, functions correctly and comprises an attractive and fitting representation of them".
