Virgin Media to launch 100Mbps broadband this week?

Prime Minister hints at launch in speech

The Prime Minister, David Cameron, has hinted that Virgin Media may be preparing to launch its 100Mbps broadband service this week.

During a speech at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) about how the government plans to improve Britain's infrastructure, Cameron said: "We'll work with utility companies to get more investment in our energy, with construction companies on our roads, with the telecommunications industry on broadband. This collaboration is already working. Virgin Media is rolling out a new superfast broadband service this week".

The ISP however was reluctant to confirm when the service would be launched.

"Virgin Media currently provides the fastest broadband service in the UK, with our 50Mbps service, and we're excited that we will soon be revealing the details of our new ultrafast 100Mbps service," the ISP said.

Virgin said in February it planned to roll-out a 100Mbps service - which will allow web users to download a music album in as little as five seconds and an hour-long TV show in 31 seconds - by the end of this year.

"Just as we led the way by launching the UK's first ever next-generation service, we want to keep giving our customers the very best broadband available, by investing in technological innovation and transforming the experience they have when they are online," Virgin Media's chief executive officer, Neil Berkett, said at the time.
