BT has revealed it will be offering a 110Mbps fibre broadband service from spring 2011.
The fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) service will be provided by BT Openreach, the telecom giant's wholesale division. UK ISPs will be able to rent the lines from BT Openreach for £21.54 per month, although how much the final cost to consumers will be remains unknown. BT did say there would be a £75 installation fee.
"You're going to get 100Mbps, it's not an 'up to' service," a BT spokesman told PC Pro.
The service will also offer upload speed of 15Mbps. However the 100Mbps connection isn't guaranteed. Instead, the minimum guaranteed speed will be 20Mbps.
"If the network is flooded, you get a prioritised 20Mbps per user," BT added.
Trials of the service are currently underway in Bradwell Abbey in Milton Keynes and Highams Park in North London, and will be rolled-out nationwide from March next year.
Rival ISP Virgin Media plans to roll-out its own 100Mbps fibre broadband service by the end of this year.

sirjohng said: TED this sounds very poor Have you tried all the fixes in your home like connecting the router to your MAIN telephone point where it first enters the house and see if this makes a difference I have found that changing the router can make a difference of up to 1Mbps even the same type so that is worth a try If you can borrow someone elses from nearby on the same exchange and plug it in to your BT socket This will also give you a comparisson with their speed You do not have to reconfigure it Have you done a speed test with the PC Advisor test above If this is significantly better then look to your house connections and make sure you have an ADSL splitter filter on ALL your phone pointsHope this helps
Ted Burnham said: It would very nice to get a broadband service with a speed greater than 256k even though I live quite close to a BT exchange and have BT as my service provider for broadband I am limited to 256k max on copper wire
sirjohng said: As for us in the countryside being paid for by those in the towns get a life mate who feeds you
sirjohng said: So the government of the day sold the Post Office Telecomunications to BT and gave them and their shareholders a virtual monopoly they also gave them restrictive covenants which have hampered progress in some areas of business Barring Virgin they can do and say what they damn well please and with Ofcom populated at the top with place men who is to stop them Well Virgin actually as they are now able to advertise the fastest broadband speeds in the UK so BT hastily bring out the above garbage to hoodwink the vast majority of customers who really dont have a clue and just go on believing and continue to make BT the largest providor of crap broadband

GS said: what really gets my goat is I live in Milton Keynes and currently get 1mbps When the exchanges is MK get upgraded I will still be on 1mbps because I am still too far away from an exchange for FTTC The best bit is I live closer to the Bradwell Abbey exchange that the one I am connected to physically I wont be able to campaign to get FTTC since were already in an upgrade area BT is royally screwing people over and Im sick of it because there is nothing we can do
callum said: I agree with the general moaning about BT - this is another blatant lie they even admit its a lie in the same press releaseHowever for the most part its not always the case I know some towns are badly served the slow speeds are because you have chosen to live in a rural location You have chosen to be further away from the towns and cities so you cant just take the benefit of that then expect those living in the towns and cities to subsidise your broadband connection
