Losing touch abroad costs us business, say firms

Roaming charges impede business communication

Just under half of firms have lost business because they didn't stay in touch with clients or colleagues when abroad, according to TruPhone.

Research by the mobile phone service that uses VoIP technology to route calls over the internet and reduce costs, revealed that more than two thirds (69 percent) of Brits that travel abroad for business feel mobile phone roaming charges are too high.

Furthermore, 48 percent admitted they checked their email less when out of the country in a bid to reduce costs while one in three (32 percent) admit they turn off their data connection entirely as a result

Seven in ten said make fewer or shorter calls when abroad, while 10 percent even resort to swapping to a SIM from the country they're in to reduce costs.

"The charges levied by the big operators are prohibitive, and businesses are losing out as a result. Using your mobile less when abroad is not good for business," said Geraldine Wilson, CEO of Truphone.
