Amazon opens UK Kindle store

Eighty of UK's 100 bestsellers now available

Amazon has opened a UK Amazon Kindle bookstore featuring more than 400,000 books, magazines and newspapers that can be viewed on the company's eBook Reader.

A number of eBooks are available to download for free, while the paid-for titles start at £1.96. More than 80 of the 100 titles that appear in the Nielsen UK bestsellers list are available on the store.

Prior to the launch of the UK Store, Brits with a Kindle had to download eBooks from the US store, and were charged in dollars.

According to Amazon, 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' by Swedish author Stieg Larsson is currently the best-selling title on the store. Last week, Larson became the first novelist to hit the million eBook sales mark on Amazon.

"The opening of the UK Kindle Store allows customers to buy content in pounds sterling and offers a great shopping experience including UK customer reviews, recommendations, bestseller lists and customer service," said Greg Greeley, vice president of European retail at Amazon.

Amazon said in the US last month it sold 143 Kindle ebooks for every 100 hardbacks sold in the previous three months.

The launch of the UK Kindle Store comes just days after Amazon made a new version of the Kindle available.
