85% of mobile broadband users have had connection problems

Slow speeds are the most common gripe

More than four in five mobile broadband users (85 percent) have experienced problems with their connection, says Acision.

Research by the mobile data service, which was conducted in conjunction with YouGov, revealed that slow speeds was the most common issue, experienced by 67 percent of mobile broadband users, closely followed by poor network coverage (49 percent) and inability to connect at all (45 percent).

Furthermore 40 percent admitted they had experienced a loss of connection.

Acision also said that more than half (56 percent) of mobile broadband users were unaware if their provider had a fair usage policy, while 71 percent did not know that on many mobile networks, five percent of users generate over 80 percent of broadband traffic, causing slow download speeds and connection problems for all users.

Nearly three quarters of mobile broadband users want an active approach to distributing bandwidth fairly between as many people as possible to ease congestion, while 49 percent said they would be happy to pay a small fee for this if it means a better broadband service.

More than a third (36 percent) of Brits say they use their mobile broadband connection to access video on the web. Furthermore, 63 percent of these say they've experienced frequent pauses when watching videos, while 55 percent said they experienced these problems on a regular basis.

Nearly half of Brits (48 percent) said they would be happy if their mobile broadband provider enforced content optimisation techniques such as reducing the size of the video being watched if it ensured it would not pause or stall.

"Mobile broadband is a frequent topic of debate with UK consumers," said Marek Vaygelt, head of consumer, technology and telecoms consulting, YouGov.

"The research highlights that many consumers are suffering regular and significant problems with their mobile broadband and can be frustrated with the service they receive. It is also apparent that if approached in the right way, consumers may be open to content adaptation, service differentiation as well as the option of having bandwidth distributed fairly amongst all users to provide a better service."
