CEOP button accounts for 70% of web content reports

Tool to report dodgy web content pays dividends

Nearly seven in ten reports to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) of inappropriate content or behaviour on the web came from the Centre's reporting button.

The CEOP received a total of 6,291 reports of inappropriate content or behaviour on the web in the past year, many of which also came from law enforcement agencies and industry bodies.

The organisation also revealed it had 600 requests from websites to embed the 'ClickCEOP' reporting button between November 2009 and March 2010. Social network Bebo is among the sites that offer the button. However, Facebook has still yet to embed the button on its site, which has raised a number of concerns.

The CEOP has worked with Microsoft to create a version of its Internet Explorer 8 browser aimed at keeping children safe on the web, as well as joining forces with Google and Mozilla to produce add-ons for the Chrome and Firefox browsers.

The organisation also said it had recruited 46,000 local volunteers ranging from teachers and police officers to youth group leaders, to host internet safety lessons in 5.7 million UK schools over the past year.

"CEOP brings together cross-sector expertise and then delivers bespoke front line services to a whole network of practitioners," said Jim Gamble, chief executive of the CEOP.

"Our results year on year show the very lasting and significant impact we are making."
