A million over 50s log on for first time

38.8 millions Brits now use the web

More than a million over 50s surfed the internet for the first time during the past 12 months, says the UK Online Measurement Company (UKOM).

The online research firm revealed that the over 50s group made up more than half of the two million new web users that logged on in the past year.

UKOM also said 38.8 million Brits now use the web, compared to 36.9 million a year ago.

The over 50s make up 31 percent of UK web surfers, while the majority of the over 50s that have got online in the past year were men.

"The internet is getting older in more ways than one. Not only is the medium itself maturing but the audience is shifting towards older age groups," said Alex Burmaster, from UKOM.

"There is a still a perception that the net is youth-centric but this is clearly not the reality."

Saga, RealAge and video site Flixxy were the three most popular websites with the over 50s.
