Make money on YouTube without joining Partner Program

Popular clips will automatically qualify for scheme

YouTube is extending its Partner Program to individuals that haven't signed up, allowing them to profit from popular clips they upload to the Google-owned video-sharing website.

The scheme gives users a share of the revenue generated from advertisements that run next to their video. The more videos you post and the more popular they are, the more money you make.

Initially individuals had to apply for membership to the program, which YouTube says has made some users "thousands of dollars", before they could start making money.

However, following criticism by Google's investors, YouTube will now send an "enable revenue sharing" email to web users who have posted clips that are becoming popular on the site.

Although YouTube wouldn't reveal how many views a clip needed for it to be deemed popular enough to take part in the scheme.

"We think there's tens of thousands more partners that we can generate through this content," says Tom Pickett, director online sales at YouTube.
