Risk of hefty bills hampers mobile web

Mobile group calls for "greater transparency"

Consumers are reluctant to use their handsets to access the internet because they fear huge bills, according to the Mobile Data Association (MDA).

According to the MDA's mobile trends report, the mobile web usage has increased by 25 percent in the past two years. However, chairman Steve Reynolds said many consumers are confused and concerned about costs involved, which has resulted in them holding back on adopting the technology.

Reynolds said there was a need for "greater price transparency on the costs associated with using the mobile internet".

If this happens, the MDA predicts mobile internet will grow by a further 20 percent in 2009 and become a real rival to desktop internet access.
