BBC iPlayer available through TV sets

Virgin customers press red button to access service

The BBC iPlayer is to be available though TV sets following a BBC deal with Virgin Media.

By simply tuning to any BBC channel and pressing the red button Virgin Media customers can access the iPlayer and catch up with their favourite shows from the past seven days. TV titles available include 'Top Gear', 'Eastenders' and 'The Apprentice' .

Malcolm Wall, CEO of content at Virgin Media, said: "The enormous success of iPlayer online has demonstrated the desire TV viewers have for viewing quality programmes at a time that suits them, and now it's available from the comfort of the living room."

Ashley Highfield, the BBC's director of future media and technology, said: "We have always envisaged BBC iPlayer on a TV platform and in the living room."

It is rumoured the BBC is in discussions with a number of other TV and mobile phone companies about launching versions of the iPlayer not tied to the PC.
