Twitter is 38th most visited website in UK

Twitpic photo service also on the up

Twitter is the 38th most visited site by UK web users, says Hitwise.

According to the web traffic analyst, in May last year the micro blogging service was the 969th most visited website in the UK. However, a 22-fold increase in traffic has seen Twitter leap into the top 40.

"Twitter has been the fastest growing major website in the UK over the last 12 months, and certainly the most talked about," said Robin Goad, director of research at Hitwise.

"The noticeable thing about Twitter's growth is that the vast majority of it - 93 percent in fact - has occurred during 2009. Media coverage of the site has escalated significantly this year and high profile celebrity endorsements, by everyone from Stephen Fry to Ashton Kutcher, have come rolling in. If people accessing their Twitter accounts via mobile phones and third-party applications (such as Twitterific, Twitterfeed and Tweetdeck) were included, the numbers could be even higher."

Hitwise also revealed Twitter was the 30th biggest source of traffic to other websites and that Twitpic a photo sharing service that allows users to upload photos and pictures to Twitter, has benefited from Twitter's increased popularity.

UK internet visits to Twitpic have increased 250 fold over the past year, making it the third most popular photo site with UK web users behind Flickr and Photobucket.
