Yahoo dumps GeoCities

Customers urged to switch to Yahoo hosting

Yahoo has revealed it is pulling the plug on GeoCities, its consumer web hosting business.

Yahoo bought GeoCities in 1999 for $3.57bn but the popularity of the service has been waning. The search engine said it wouldn't accept any new customers and would help existing customers to "build new relationships online".

"We have decided to discontinue the process of allowing new customers to sign up for GeoCities accounts as we focus on helping our customers explore and build new relationships online in other ways," Yahoo said.

"You don't need to change your service today, but we encourage anyone interested in a full-featured web-hosting plan to consider upgrading to our award-winning Yahoo! web hosting service," a post on the GeoCities home page read.

The announcement comes just days after Yahoo revealed it planned to axe a further 700 jobs after its net income for Q1 fell by 78 percent.
