Data download charges differ dramatically

Orange is the 'most expensive provider'

The price of downloading video clips from your mobile phone when abroad varies dramatically between the UK's five network providers, says Broadband Expert.

According to the broadband comparison site, Orange has the most expensive data-roaming charges, with each MB downloaded inside the EU priced at £3.94, and £6.32 if you're in a country outside the EU.

Broadband Expert said Vodafone was the cheapest operator by charging £9.99 for a day's use of up to at 50Mb inside the EU, which is equivalent to 20p per MB, while downloading a MB of data outside the EU would cost £4.99.

"We would like to see companies be more proactive in moving their customers away from unreasonable rates," said Rob Webber, Broadband Expert's commercial director.

"Information relating to mobile broadband charges abroad is often hard to find on many providers websites leaving customers open to excessive charges," he added.

Webber also urged consumers to only use their handsets lightly while abroad and just indulging in activities including "checking emails and general web surfing" in a bid to keep bills low.
