BT names first 40Mbps fibre broadband areas

500,000 to get superfast broadband in 2010

BT has revealed that its superfast fibre broadband roll-out will begin early next year, and has provided details of the first 29 areas to be benefit from the technology.

The telecom giant said 500,000 homes and businesses will have access to download speeds of around 40Mbps when the company installs fibre-to-the-cabinet technology in several inner-city areas in 2010.

Areas in and around London will be among the first to benefit - eight London exchanges are set to get fibre broadband in the initial roll-out. Other areas included in the first round of upgrades include Manchester, Cardiff, Belfast and Edinburgh, although not everyone in those cities will be connected to an upgraded BT exchange - see the full list below.

The 40Mbps speeds are 10 times those achieved by most UK homes, and BT said early trials suggested download rates may even be higher than that. Pilot schemes testing fibre broadband in London and Wales have demonstrated that the technology is capable of 60Mbps, BT said.

Fibre-based broadband will allow different members of a family to watch multiple high definition movies simultaneously, while others could play online games or download music files, the company said. As well as boosting download speeds, fibre-based broadband will significantly increase upstream speeds, meaning customers will be able to post videos more quickly.
