Three great online backup services

Where to stash your digital loot online

The web is ideal for backing up your digital files and online storage space costs very little if your needs are only modest. Should you come to depend on your backed-up files, they can be downloaded on the spot from wherever you are, provided that there's a web connection.

It's worth checking where your chosen service's storage servers are held, however. If you use US-based storage sites, the CIA and other government agencies have the right to snoop through your files. If you're not happy with the Feds filing through your holiday snaps, opt for a UK-based service.

BT Digital Vault Plus

digitalvault.bt.com

For £4.88 per month, BT offers 50GB of storage space for your photos, music and video files and other documents. You can't exceed this monthly limit (but you'd be hard pushed to).

You can invite others to view certain stored files. BT Fusion mobile customers can also use Snap and Send to upload photos from their mobile phone.

Storegate

storegate.co.uk

Storegate offers a free ‘online hard drive', otherwise known as 2GB of web space. You can use the service to create a web album for friends and family to view, or to stream music and video to any PC with a web connection.

An extra 3GB of storage space will cost you £3.49 per month, while the PC and Phone service is available for £1.49 per month. This allows you to specify the times at which certain files should be backed up.
