Property portal UpMyStreet offers a search function that's similar to Yell.co.uk. You can search either for a business name or service in a particular area and UpMyStreet will display matching results. Unlike the other search engines, it also allows you to read reviews of the businesses and services or submit your own.

Rated People is a website dedicated to finding tradesmen and then providing a written recommendation of their work. It's easy to use - simply post your job, select your tradesman and, when they've finished, rate them on the website.

If it's reliable recommendations you're after, LinkedIn should probably get a mention. This social-networking site is excellent for recommending ex-colleagues and friends to others - a Web 2.0 version of the old boys' network but without the dodgy handshakes.
