The government has announced that it won't give the green light to an e-voting system for the 2009 European or local elections.
When asked about e-voting plans, Minister of state for the Ministry of Justice Michael Wills said there were no immediate plans to introduce e-voting but confirmed that trials of the system may be implemented in the future.
"The way forward more generally on e-voting will be informed by the valuable experience gained from earlier pilots, analysis of the responses to the election day consultation, and further development work including the possible further testing of e-voting solutions in non-statutory elections."
However, at present no budgets have been earmarked specifically for trialing e-voting schemes. Any trials that take place will be funded from budgets already earmarked for electoral reform.
