100Mb fibre broadband could be £10bn over budget

Broadband group says BT has got the costs wrong

Installing and supplying 100Mbps super-fast fibre broadband to the whole of the UK could cost as much as £24.5bn, says the Broadband Stakeholder Group (BSG).

The estimate, which featured in a report by the BSG, is much higher than BT's original figure of £15bn. The report also offered a number of options on how best to upgrade the UK's current copper network with high-speed fibre.

Installing fibre only to street cabinets and using 'point to point' technology to create a dedicated line from the street cabinet to the home for each customer were among the options BSG suggested.

BSG chief executive Antony Walker said: "The scale of the costs looks daunting but the report does shed light on how some costs can be reduced".
