iPlayer extended as BBC plans 'Series Stacker'

Episodes will be available online for longer

The BBC has announced that it will be extending the length of time users have to access some of the TV shows available on its iPlayer service.

At present, viewers can only access shows for up to seven days after they have been broadcast on TV, which means those who begin watching a show part-way through a series are unable to catch up with previous episodes.

However, with series stacking, which will begin on September 13, TV shows will be available on iPlayer for the length of time the series runs on TV. To begin with, only 15 percent of the BBC's content will be available for series stacking, and programmes will include new shows such as Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Survivors. Initially it will only cover shows that are streamed and not those that can be downloaded, although the BBC does plan to extend series stacking to downloadable programmes in the future.

"Series stacking will really make the unmissable, unmissable. Viewers will be able to join a series half way through following a friend's recommendation and catch up on all the previous episodes - or watch them all in one go over a weekend," said controller of multiplatform and portfolio at BBC Vision, Simon Nelson.

"Series stacking marks a key development in our strategy to let audiences view our programmes whenever and wherever they want."
