Yahoo's new Search Suggest inspired by Arnie

Search tool speeds up Yahoo web searches

Yahoo has launched Search Suggest, a new search function the company said is a "faster way to find what you're looking for".

Here's how it works: when users search for something on Yahoo, a drop-down menu will appear, automatically giving them suggestions based on what they're seeking - even as users type search words, according to a blog post by Yahoo's Kevin Lee.

Lee said the new feature limits the number of words users need to type into a query. He said it may also offer up similar queries in the drop-down menu that will shorten the time it takes to search for something. It's a faster way to get what you're looking for, Lee said in the blog.

He noted that while Search Suggest isn't a new function, it is new to Yahoo.com. "We launched this feature in the Yahoo Toolbar in Firefox a while back, and you can get it directly from the Firefox 2 search box when you select Yahoo as your search engine," Lee said in his blog.

"Let's say I'm trying to keep up with our illustrious 'governator' here in California," Lee said. "I type 'arnold s' in the search box and the suggestions pop up Arnold Schwarzenegger, which saves me from trying to spell out his last name. Or, I'm watching TV and wonder what song is in the background of a commercial that just came on. Problem is that I only remember part of the company name, 'journey diamond.' I type it into our new search box, and 'journey diamond jewellery commercial song' is suggested right away - problem solved."

Lee said that the drop-down menu shouldn't really get in a user's way, but it can be turned off by clicking on "disable" at the bottom of the menu box. And it can be can reinstalled it by selecting "more" above the search box.
