LG demonstrates circular LCD for watches

Photo: New displays also target photo frames

LG Display is to demonstrate a pair of round LCD panels and will show them for the first time at the Society For Information Display's (SID) conference next week.

One of the panels is circular and measures 35.5mm in diameter, which makes it about the right size to be used in a wristwatch.

The other panel is elliptical and measures 78.8mm by 131.4mm and could be used in digital photo frames or in-car or home electronics devices. Both can display up to 262,000 colours and have a 160 degree viewing angle, the company said.

With LCD panels become so commonly used in televisions, mobile phones, car entertainment systems, music players and other devices the development of panels in shapes other than square is seen as a natural step by many in the industry. LG's prototypes aren't the first that don't have corners. Last year Toshiba unveiled a 75mm (62mm actual screen size) diameter circular LCD and said that it could also make LCD panels in other shapes.

LG Display, which was until recently called LG.Philips LCD, is one of the world's largest LCD panel makers.
