Pre-orders for Apple's upcoming Snow Leopard operating system topped Amazon.com's bestseller list yesterday, knocking Windows 7 out of the chart just days after the online retail giant put Mac OS X 10.6 on its site.
Late yesterday Snow Leopard and the Snow Leopard Family Pack were ranked number 1 and number 2, respectively, on Amazon's software sales chart. The Family Pack provides licences for five Macs.
Apple won't release the new operating system until September, a fact that Amazon made sure to remind customers. "You may pre-order it now and we will deliver it to you when it arrives," Amazon said on the Snow Leopard sales pages.
Although Windows 7, also slated for a autumn release, had grabbed the lead spot on Amazon's software bestseller list when two editions were heavily discounted during a two-week sale earlier this summer, Microsoft's new OS was absent from the chart yesterday. The Apple rival's best showing was heavily discounted Office Home and Student 2007, in at number three.
Apple announced Snow Leopard's pricing nearly two months ago at its annual developers conference, when it said it would sell the OS for just £19. (See: 'Snow Leopard to cost £19 at September UK launch'.)
Snow Leopard was introduced in June 2008, when Apple touted it as a performance and stability update that would "take a break" from major new features.
The Snow Leopard upgrade requires an Intel-based Mac and Mac OS X 10.5, aka Leopard; users running Mac OS X 10.4, known as Tiger, must instead purchase the more expensive "Mac Box Set," which Amazon is also selling as a pre-order.

Why is this news?
It just proves the fact that NO ONE wants a warmed over VISTA.
billr said on Tuesday, 04 August 2009
Too funny... Leopard sucked for a long time so hopefully snow leopard will be leopard done right. No wonder everyone wants a copy.
Vista has worked much better for me than leopard has.
Sean said on Tuesday, 04 August 2009
That's news to me billr. Since every comparison of Leopard to Vista I have read clearly states Mac OSX is the better operating system. Windows 7 is simply a catch-up product to Leopard. And now Apple will be another 2 steps ahead of Microsoft with Snow Leopard.
Brian said on Tuesday, 04 August 2009
Well, DUH, everyone knows Windoze 7 is only a rehash of Vista. Snow Leopard, OTOH, is a rehash of Leopard! :-)
Leopard is/was a SUCCESSFUL Operating System. Windows is, well, no so much.

Never had a problem with Vista!
Maybe the complainers need to learn how to use it.
I use a Mac at work and apart from the usual image obsessed fanfare I fail to see why either one is supposedly miles better than the other.
When will this tedious battle between the Mac OS & Windows come to an end?
If you like the Mac OS then good for you & if you like Windows - Ditto!

Triple post was 'nowt' to do with me.
Maybe it's an Mac thing.

Triple posting has happened to me here too on a number of occasions.
I agree with your comments regarding the Mac/Windows war, very tedious.

Some people don't handerstand why there's OS differences. Other why a post is submitted 3 times.
Maybe you simply clicked 3 times on the submit button. This is what happends when you're used to do thing several times on your computer before it works...

Don't be such a knob Frenchy!
Can you not read the above?
I am well aware of the differences in operating systems thank you as I use both everyday.
You are not upset because I'm not claiming Apple to the be all and end all are you? Grow up!

It would appear some are beyond spelling correctly too.
You will find that double/triple posting happens here, but then I imagine you must struggle with your reading too.
The guy made a fair enough statement.
Stop trolling.

Mac users are more willing to spend money to upgrade their systems and it'll be a lot easier anyway. One size fits all, so no multiple versions to choose from.
That Mac users are upgrading is hardly significant. Eventually Windows 7 will be purchased in the hundreds of millions of orders leaving Mac OSX in the dust.

LOL - what a misleading headline.
So an item that's only just been made available has sold more IN THE PAST FEW DAYS than something that's been available from Amazon.com since June (and no longer has the reduced price incentive)?
I wonder how many copies Windows 7 sold in it's first few days?

This is stupid. The Mac OS is beating Win 7 this week, not overall. One would assume that people who are pre-ordering Win 7 have already done it for the last month while it was on sale. This is like saying because some movie that came out this week is beating Harry Potter at the box office it is going to beat it in the yearly earnings.
Jonathan said on Friday, 07 August 2009
Oh please, is this what Internet "journalism" has turned in to? Of course Snow Leopard is going to be at the top of a list of *recent* sales - it just became available a few days ago, while Windows 7 has been available for preorder for weeks. Most people that wanted to preorder Windows 7 have already done so.
I hope this guy doesn't get paid for writing this garbage...

All this means is Apple users are stupid. While you're at it, might as well send the electric company your payment for September, too.

People remember that Apple is selling what is essentially a service pack for Leopard, hence the name "Snow Leopard", even Apple themselves are telling the faithful not to be too surprised in regards to new features, as so the reason for them only charging $30.00.
I'm sure, even the faithful would be miffed if they had to fork out the usual $129.00 if it was only for an update, I know I would be.
And anyway both these operating system are reaching such a level of Maturity now that any new features I believe would only be seen as bloatware and not particularly useful.
Microsoft has found this out the hard way, hence the lightness of Windows 7 as opposed to vista

It isn't a new OS at all, just a minor patch to their old OS. Apple has even admitted this. Windows would probably have handled a patch like this online, but Apple understand that its users are so hopelessly clueless of technology and so blindingly trustful of Apple that they can package whatever crap and sell it.
