8 reasons why a Mac is better than a PC

Make sure the next computer you buy is from Apple

Harry McCracken

There are hundreds of reasons why Macs are better than PCs - they're more reliable and more creative for a start. We've put together a definitive list of eight reasons as to why your next computer should be a Mac not a PC.

While PCs may be the most widely used computer platform in the world, there are still lots of extremely rational reasons to choose a Mac running Mac OS X over a Windows PC.

Macs can leave you happier and more productive than you would have been if you'd bought a Windows system, and feeling you got good value for your money even though a Mac is never the cheapest option.

So I've put together a list of 8 reasons why you should choose a Mac over a PC. So I'm not seen as biased, I also put together 8 reasons why a PC is better than a Mac. So read both articles and make up your own mind.

1. Macs are consistently consistent

Windows Vista reminds me of a haunted mansion - they type of place with endless wings and far-flung rooms connected by twisty staircases and secret passages. And every time Microsoft does a redecorating job (also known as an upgrade), it moves some stuff around for no apparent reason.

OS X's logical, minimalist interface simply involves fewer things that must be learned and relearned, and Apple messes less with it in new releases such as Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Bottom line: it's easier to get stuff done.

2. The joy of predictability

Anyone who's ever suffered the indignity known as a Kernel Panic knows that Macs aren't bulletproof. But logging thousands of hours both on Windows PCs from multiple manufacturers and on Macs has convinced me that the average Mac is meaningfully less flakey than the average PC.

In my experience Macs crash less, suffer from fewer inexplicable slowdowns, deal better with tight memory situations, and boot up and shut down quicker and more reliably. Also I suspect it doesn't hurt that Apple is the only company in the business that writes its own operating system and designs its own hardware.

3. Who needs security headaches?

If the internet's bad guys ever decide to pummel OS X with the same intensity that they've pounded on Windows for years, the free ride for Mac fans may end. But for now, this fact is indisputable: a Mac owner who uses no security software at all runs less risk of being infected by spyware or a virus than a Windows user who obsessively protects his or her PC.

4. Crud, or the lack thereof

Windows is an infinitely better operating system when it isn't smothered by the demoware, adware, and other unwantedware that so many PC manufacturers splay onto the Start menu, the desktop, and the System Tray.

Macs are utterly free of such junk, as well as native-to-Windows irritations like word balloons burbling out of the System Tray, Windows Activation, and User Account Control.

I do not think Apple have developed the OS entirely: the Mac OS uses UNIX and builds layers on top of this. where did your writer get this information that Apple develops their OS entirely?

what a load of bull ive had apple computers that have played up on me more than my windows computer. the pcs and macs are the same it just comes down to choice.

Jon said on Saturday, 02 May 2009

At my last college the macs were at least 15 years old and had 1MB of RAM. People were unfairly comparing them with the 2 year old PC's.

Not bad considering the IT guy didn't even touch them.
"I don't even know how to turn a MAC on."

donatelli said on Saturday, 02 May 2009

this is utter bullshit - and people need to move on pretending that Vista is some brick shithouse. I've had countless Macs and up until they switched to intel CPU, they were horribly chuggy. Just because the pretty website lists all the "latest" hardware, doesn't mean it's superior. They are a brand image, and they play on that image quite well and people eat it up.

One could build, or have built, a windows machine 5x better than the current, $3000 Mac. And no, Mac's aren't free of junk, it's just hidden with the program files and system files. I maintain a Mac Lab and you would not believe the crap on these machines. Don't buy into the hype, think for yourself about which is better. None of these points are accurate.

JESUS,
Sounds like you have some frontal lobe impulse control problems yourself. That worked up over an article, and all of your profanity is not very rational.
The frontal lobe of the brain is a very important part of a complex cognitive processing system, and has many connections to different areas of the brain. It has a special role in planning and organising different tasks like a "supervisor". Many aspects of everyday life are mainly controlled by the frontal lobe system:
Decision-making and planning of new situations
Error detection and correction and developing plans for trouble-shooting
Technically difficult or new situations with demand for new solutions
Resisting temptations and habitual responses
Impulse control and dealing with frustrations

Ok donatelli, call...

Name ONE piece of "crud" you have found on Mac OS X that comes on the computer.

I deal with the typical Windows user every day and will never be fooled into thinking using Windows equals a higher IQ. Most of these people do not know where their applications are saving their documents and they have been using computers for years.

All this time you Wintards haven't figured out that if Apple wasn't offering a superior product, they wouldn't be in business.

Good grief, Apple's first attempt at a phone isn't by any means perfect, but the iPhone has left Windows Mobile in the dust.

Wake up Wintards, reality is calling...

ID Bash said on Saturday, 02 May 2009

Appple is allowed to live for one reason and one reason alone, to keep Microsoft from a monopoly. In all reality, Windows always has been and (more than likely) always will be, unless the world has a wakeup call and switches to linux. The real title of this should be: The brainwashed mac-heads delusions of their "OS" that is inferior in every way.

I mean why don't we list the most popular os's, #1 Vista, #2 XP... wait no OSX?!! Why? Because it sucks! See the reason people buy windows is not to solve headaches, because complexity breeds those. We buy windows so we can get shit done! Because windows doesn't hinder the user from doing whatever they need to at any given time. The fact that I do not have to shell out 300$ for apple's crap sound editing when I can spend 75$ for a far superior windows based.... I mean really... Come on....

PS - Windows 7 is the shit, even in its 1st beta is beta than any OS I have EVER worked on, including UBuntu and Mint...

Why would you post Mac's are better then pc's? It all comes down to what you want to do... game get a pc... macs are just for making videos, internet, music, pictures, all that junk. but if you want to game and have you games look the best its a pc for sure.. if you can manage to learn how to fix a pc.. then a mac is for you mr. lazy i dont want to learn to fix my reg

kash said on Saturday, 02 May 2009

Heres teh way I see it, Macs are better for the designer, Photoshop, final cut, garageband, etc. what I have experienced, are those doing a little better job on a mac compared to the PC. The PC owns Apple when it comes to business and gaming, along with a vast amount of software.

Now here comes Linux, the free solution to all, and the fastest most reliable system.

I'm a hybrid, I use all 3 of them, and love them all!

Jim said on Saturday, 02 May 2009

why Macs are not on my "wish list":

1. apple tax: macs are prohibitively EXPENSIVE compared to other PCs. I won't pay 500 bucks more just to have some "nice-to-have" features.

2. that software I love to use isn't on mac. too bad. and emulation... please! why would I want to emulate what I can run native.

3. point 6 "apple is the best software maker"... aha, why is Office the best selling business software on that system?

4. I've heard some very nasty stories about apple store service... as far as I know you have to pay a lot for insurance and stuff extra.

5. "macs are consistent": well, at least on my PC the @-key hasn't moved around on my keyboard.

6. I hate the keyboards and don't like the mouse with one button (personally).

Jim said on Saturday, 02 May 2009

ok, what is really great:

1. you're the cool cat with a mac. great branding.

2. slick design (at high prices) but slick it is.

3. most document interchanges at least aren't as much a hassle as before.

4. OS X is a great *nix clone, finally with prompt (never trust a system without a prompt!)

5. overall software packages are very solid if you want to edit media.

6. I really really like some of the design ideas (personally).

hmm.. said on Saturday, 02 May 2009

But macs arnt reliable as they say they are.. they Can be more reliable but my friend has a mac and i used to own one it froze all the time and was extreamly slow. Also the software support isnt very good why pay that much for all that power and use it to edit a video or whatever?. And it is extreamly easy to get OSX on Windows hardware.. so that isnt an advantage over windows that OSX can do the opposite and is it slow? cause i'm guessing it may use emulation. so basically i woud buy a PC get two HDD shove OSX on one and put Windows on the other.. easy.. i might do that.. but yet again i wouldnt have very much fun using OSX as i cant play games and i could just do everything mac does on windows.......

foxdie said on Saturday, 02 May 2009

im in college and own a PC however i use mac's on a daily basis as i have been taking digital art classes and all the comp labs are mac's. My point is i am switching back and forth from mac to pc and using the same programs like photoshop, flash and illustrator on both platforms and find it much easier to use them all on a pc and the one button mouse is just a pain to use. you need both hands on a mac if you want to right click, while i can eat a sandwich and work at the same time with my pc

Now you know!

Sally Thopsom said on Sunday, 03 May 2009

I like macs since there is more quality software for macs than pcs. Plus you don't have to worry about security problems since they run on Unix.

Sure they are a little more expense up front, but since they have far less problems and last longer they are actually cheaper than Pcs.

Someday everyone will have a mac, so this article helps people move quicker away from windows.

I switched three and half years ago, and its millions of times better than windows. I feel sorry for people still using windows, they don't know what they are missing.

Rory Rodgers said on Sunday, 03 May 2009

Macs are for itarded elitist jackass apple zealots that like to tell people they have something that is better because it must be to cost so much. They must be 'educated' in order to afford neutered itarded things that cost much more than their more useful and effective counterparts.
PCs (any OS of users choice) are for people with things to do...

Where the compulsion to own a Mac if you are either: in a band, a graphic designer, unemployed or just plain retarded, i'm not sure, probably because they see it as joining the 'elitist' Mac 'Community' that sadly seems to gather in coffee shops all over te country. As my colleague commented the other day when a Mac appeared on the desk "Oh I didn't realise Fisher Price still made laptops" Who wrote this Steve F-ing Jobs??

For home users. Macs are designed for ease of use which caters to home users. Windows are designed with businesses in mind for networking etc. That's where MSFT's Window's shine. And thank god for MSFT's utterly messed up OS that has created many IT jobs for people to fix all the problems that MSFT has programmed into their products. Without it, there would be no IT industry.

Mr. Reality said on Sunday, 03 May 2009

If one could easily put MAC OS X on an intel box that would normally sport WIN OS, many would opt for MAC OS X. MAC OS X isn't perfect but it's a much better designed OS than Windows. Microsoft flopped big time with Vista and had to scramble to reboot it with Win 7, which so far sounds like the OS Vista should have been.

Biggest problem with the iMac is that you can't upgrade it yourself. You have to lug the damn thing into an apple store for them to get inside it. You just can't tinker with Apple computers.

SB said on Sunday, 03 May 2009

Vista is an extremely stable operating system packed with some great features. Thats why its the fastest selling operating system of all time, bad timing and constant negative press because of initial hardware compatability which has been totally ironed out, meant that the tools that just assumed instead of using it are still telling the world Vista is crap. It also seems to have escaped everyone's attention that Windows 7 is has the same skeletal structure as Vista anyway. There is more chance of hell freezing over than Macs being widely used. Mainly because they are over priced, Manilla envelope fitting, shitehawks for primary school children

Ron said on Sunday, 03 May 2009

@Reality
You say that, but Microsoft's commercials argue otherwise. I take it that yours is exactly 65, and the only thing you can figure is the Mac buyers must be lower than you. Sorry to bring you in out of the cold; don't forget to pin your mittens to your shirt, or you'll lose them.

Gordon Ramsay's Donkey said on Sunday, 03 May 2009

SB,

Vista isn't bad it's just one of those projects that wasn't ready to ship and yet Microhell shipped it. Anyone who has tested Windows 7 freely admits 7 is what Vista should have been but isn't. 7 is a less intrusive and faster OS at this time (remains to be seen if it will stay that way with the RC). Sure negative press hurt Vista but what really hurt it is that businesses refused to upgrade to it because Vista wasn't worth it to them. That's what did Vista in and Microhell knows that. We shall see how 7 does when it is officially released.

* Brighter screen
* Multi-configurable for OS
* Easy to upgrade - buy a new one in 15 months

Windorks are funny. Look at all their stupid comments ;-)

Brian said on Monday, 04 May 2009

Great article. Lots of raving comments from people who do not understand even the basics of Macs.

For example:
1). There is no 'emulation' of PC crud on the Mac anymore, that was the 80's and 90's folks. You need to update your dogma. Nowadays, Macs are PC hardware, they are running all your crud *FASTER* than ANY PC, because Apple is free to use EFI hardware, not trapped using BIOS (another legacy 80's tech that MSFT insists board pluggers like Dell, etc.. continue to use.)

2.) Apple gave up the one button mouse YEARS ago. It's pretty cool though, they ones they have been shipping for years now still works (and looks) that way, or you can turn on the 'right' button and use it when you are eating a sandwich. ;-) And the scroll ball beats a scroll wheel anyday. They really handled this in a great way, so much so that the PC crowd is really confused and unaware of what they did.

Brian said on Monday, 04 May 2009

One more thing. Windows '7' (how original!) will flop just like Vista did. Sit back and watch it happen. There are tons of complaints about the beta already.

Brian said on Monday, 04 May 2009

It is irony that my name contains the same letter as the word 'brain' considering I obviously do not have one. There is no way I could have a brain and think Macs are faster or better in any way. Considering it is PCs that are able to run the Mac OS without emulation not the other way around. Yes Macs are PC hardware, just marked up %500 and sold to people with no opinions of their own, who have been told that Macs are somehow worth it. PS... iSuck iCock.

Brian said on Monday, 04 May 2009

I obviously do not understand any of the terms that I use, PCs have had EMI longer than Macs, all EMI is is a "better" interface for a bios.

Not true that Windows and Macs "are the same it just comes down to choice." I've have worked on both and continue to do so and can assure you in my experience the Windows OS has many more annoying issues on a regular basis. I don't know if that is the fault of the OS itself or it is from the multitude of add-ons that computer manufacturers install in an attempt to customize the Windows OS but that is the reality. I think the aesthetic problem with Windows is that it's kind of boring and corporate looking and feeling.

It fried a new hard drive within a week, I still can't recieve emails, though it will send them if it feels like it.
Every 'assistant', 'genius', or whatever stupidly inappropriate name they choose to call their next piece of junk, is useless, popping up with all sorts of terminology to confuse you to the brink of insanity.
£1,600 and it doesn't even come with a manual.
No wireless modem.
No soundcard worth speaking of.
ONE 320 gig hard drive that grinds away for ages until it shows you what's on it.
2 gigs of ram.
ONE 'superdrive' that takes an eon to read a simple DVD, freezing you out of doing anything else until it tells you what's on the damn thing.
This is a quad core, but it's worse than my single core AMD laptop (Which, CAN receive emails.)

OSX is the obvious loser. Why compare it with Vista is it because your desperate for it to win? Linux and XP are the greatest OS's made in my opinion. I do quite alot of gaming aswell OSX is only good for photography in my opinion and its very overly priced.

Chris M said on Tuesday, 05 May 2009

As I have a Toshiba P200 and 2 Mac's a Macbook Pro and Macbook Air. All 3 machines are great, but Vista is poor compared to OS X, reboots after software installs and various updates. DVD drives going missing and other fun quirks. OS X is far more stable and load times are good. 43 seconds cold boot, 2 seconds wake up. Compared to 2mins 32 seconds cold boot and 48 seconds wake up for Vista.

Final comment is thanks to O2 isp, for Windows, install software and follow on screen instructions, For OS X , plug cable in.

I like Vista having said all that, and Windows 7 looks very good, so I will get it. But would I ditch my Mac's? Not a chance besides with Snow Leopard on the horizon I am looking forward to an OS that doesnt eat the harddrive up.

Cliff said on Wednesday, 06 May 2009

I have used Windows, OSX and Linux. I prefer Windows for my home and business requirements because the hardware overhead is much lower on the Windows end. The new Macs use much of the same hardware but you still need to buy some mac essentials (ie video and sound cards).
Linux is a hardware nightmare and still needs way too much command line configuration (if it finds your hardware at all).
Windows 7 is and will be my OS of choice. I have found NOTHING as easy as this OS.

Please do yourself and other Mac users a favor and do some research before making misleading statements such as this. OSX is a derivative BSD. Apple did do work to make their own distribution, but was not responsible for every aspect of it's design. Microsoft has designed more operating systems from scratch, technically.

windows based systems allow alot more freedom/tinkering/ upgrading where a mac is fixed, less problems, less faf if you dont want it

people argue cause different people want different things, these 2 brands exist cause they are different

i wont have a mac cause i like tinkering, like learning about how o change background tasks, and need the vast array of little prgrams, [if you want something done, theres a windows program thatll do it

just my opinion
