Mozilla makes Firefox 3.1 beta 3 available

Latest version features improved private browsing

Carrie-Ann Skinner

The third beta of Mozilla's Firefox web browser has finally been publicly released.

The new version of the browser features improvements to its TraceMonkey JavaScript engine as well as the Private Browsing Mode. Mozilla has also widened the range of file formats supported by the browser and also added support for web technologies including the W3C Geolocation API, JavaScript query selectors, CSS 2.1 and 3 properties, SVG transforms and offline applications.

The release of the latest beta of the web browser comes just weeks after Apple launched version 4 of its Safari browser.

Mozilla also revealed it will rename Firefox 3.1. The software company said its plans to call it Firefox 3.5 instead. Developers said that the '3.1' moniker didn't properly reflect the number of new features and changes from last June's Firefox 3.0.

The beta can be downloaded from the Mozilla's website now.
