Spotify launched on Symbian smartphones

Music-streaming service now on 50% of phones

Spotify is now available on Symbian mobile phones, meaning that the Swedish music streaming is now available on over 50 percent smartphones. Spotify is also available on the iPhone and Google Android-powered phones.

The Spotify service, which is already available on Apple's iPhone and Google Android handsets, is now compatible with a range of Symbian phones including the Nokia 6220 Classic, E71 and 5800 XpressMusic phones, the Samsung GT-I8910 Omnia HD and Sony Ericsson Satio. Users with have to invest in the Spotify Premium £9.99 service to run the Symbian application.

Spotify’s Symbian application will allow users to continue to run Spotify in the background while texting, making calls, web browsing etc, as well offering an offline mode for listening without internet connection.

"The launch of Spotify’s Symbian app opens up our mobile music service to potentially millions more music fans across Europe," said Gustav Söderström, director of portable solutions at Spotify.

"This takes our mobile music offering to a totally new level."

Spotify launched on the iPhone and Android platforms in September. Users can listen to tracks and albums in their entirety, rewind, fast-forward, pause, skip and shuffle and view cover art for all tracks and albums.

Last month,Spotify celebrated its first birthday.
