MySpace may develop iPod-killer

CEO DeWolfe says 'It's possible'

Social networking site MySpace may create a digital music player to rival Apple's iPod.

According to Reuters, MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe said: "It's possible", when questioned at the Web 2.0 Summit conference that took place in the US this week.

"Right now, we're just focusing on the service," added DeWolfe, in reference to MySpace Music - an online music download and streaming service launched earlier this year, which is currently only available in the US.

DeWolfe said the service was proving successful with more than 1 billion tracks being streamed in the first few days.

"If anything, we'll be accretive to iPod sales," as people use MySpace Music to download more music and videos for their iPods, DeWolfe said. "Unless we develop a device," he added.

Not a bad idea, free enterprize-speaking. But for us indie artists, this means losing a free place to promote and sell our music. Welcome to The Machine.

Smartphones can be connected to a laptop to provide 3G mobile broadband. Is this more appealing than using a dedicated 3G dongle?

Once lost my connection at home and used my 3g Nokia via the OVI Suite. It was ok, but only for emergencies. RT @PhoenixDfire
