Championship Manager developer Eidos has announced what it claims is a first in the video games industry - a ‘pay what you want' model allowing football fans to buy the latest instalment of the game for as little as 1p.
Due to become available on pre-order today, the downloadable version of Championship Manager 2010 is subject to a £2.50 transaction fee, but buyers can choose how much extra they pay until September 10.
The move echoes a similar initiative in 2008 by rock band Radiohead with the launch of their album 'In Rainbows', but is unprecedented in the games industry,
The Championship Manager franchise is one of the most successful game series of all time, and the 2010 instalment has been in development for more than two years.
Described by Eidos as the most realistic version yet, Championship Manager 2010 includes a new 3D match engine with over 500 individual player animations and a set-piece creator giving users the chance to make their own free-kick and corner routines.
Also new is CM Season Live - which is updated every month with real player data and information for the 2009/10 football season. Available for £5 for six updates, CM Season Live updates statistics such as scores, competition standings, player transfers, bookings and major injuries

1p + 2.50 transaction fee + 5.00 data update fee. so £7.51. Still cheap, but more of a viral marketing idea I think.

The £5 update fee (meaning that you get 6 updates through the year with transfers etc) is completely optional. The £2.50 transaction fee is not.
The minimum you can purchase for is £2.51, which is what I've just done. I've never played CM before, and I guess this is the whole point of this price structuring, to bring new people to the game. Good luck to them, I hope more game makers follow suit.
