NextDC begins Perth datacentre construction

Datacentre operator, NextDC (ASX:NXT) has commenced preparation work for the construction of its energy efficient Perth datacentre 'P1' in Malaga.

It has been described as an enterprise-class colocation facility measuring about 9600sqm. About 3000sqm will be technical space and contain 6MW of IT load, making it one of the highest density datacentres in Australia, according to NextDC CEO, Craig Scroggie. It will also feature 2000sqm of office space.

It has been touted as one of the largest independent datacentres in Perth, according to the company's ASX statement.

The design will also feature energy saving initiatives such as solar and tri-generational plants, direct free air cooling technology and a targeted PUE of 1.3 or less.

During the construction phase, more than 100 tradespeople will be employed and the P1 facility will create a number of new employment opportunities.

Local project manager, Terry Hendricks, will oversee the construction of the facility and has more than 10 years experience having managed planning and construction of multiple datacentres.

The facility will go live in the fourth quarter of the 2013 calendar year.

P1 will be NextDC's fifth national datacentre.
