Wi-Fi goes solar powered

Green routers provide reliable solution

Orlando-based Solis Energy has produced a portable, uninterrupted power supply for Wi-Fi routers that's powered by solar energy. The product is designed to be used where grid-supplied electricity is not available.

The company's Solar Power Plant series of products use solar power generators that deliver solar-generated electricity to specific applications. The systems from Solis are made up of a collection of batteries and a solar panel. Electricity is generated from sunlight which directs electrons to the batteries to power the router. The system’s batteries enable it to last for up to a week without recharging.

At the moment the devices from Solis are being used in applications requiring low power such as wireless communication and security camera systems. However, the company hopes it can apply the technology to a more diverse selection of products in the future.
