According to Android Police, Google will launch 'Play Games' for Android smartphones and tablets. The feature will be similar to Apple's Game Centre for iOS and Microsoft's Xbox Live service. See also: What to expect from Google I/O: Google I/O 2013 predictions.

With a little green controller for its icon, Google Play Games will bring features like multiplayer, leaderboards, achievements, in-game chat and matchmaking. It will also include lobbies, invitations and best of all, cloud game saves.

It's a feature of Android which has been missing for a long while. After all, a high percentage of Android owners use their device to play games. See also: Google Nexus 11 leaked along with more Samsung Galaxy tablets.

The biggest feature is the ability to save game progress across multiple devices via the cloud meaning you no longer have to play through a game with levels on one device. It's possible that only certain games will support the feature though.

The news comes after Rovio launched the Rovio Account for this exact purpose. Users can sync progress on The Croods and Angry Birds classic.

Based on the screenshot, the settings for the Google Play Games app allows you to switch requests and notifications from games on and off, plus choose who can send you notifications.

With Google I/O kicking off tomorrow, it's likely we could see the Google Play Games app announced as a new feature of Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. There might be some new Nexus devices, too.
