Google adds in-app subscriptions to Play Store

Content at a monthly or annual fee

Google has launched monthly subscriptions within apps in the Google Play Store.

The firm has been allowing developers to use in-app billing and has now opened the possibility for subscriptions. Developers can now opt to charge users a monthly or annual fee from inside their smartphone and tablet apps.

"While making it easy for developers to offer a great purchasing experience, our subscriptions are also designed for flexibility." said Google.

"Developers can use them to monetize premium dynamic content such as journals and magazines, but they can also use them to sell access to bundled products, game levels, music and video content, value-added services, or any other digital content."

All subscriptions will automatically renew and it's up to the developer to set the billing interval and price. Google will email users informing them of price changes and renewals but users can cancel any subscriptions via the My Apps sections of the Google Play Store.

Several developers are expected to launch apps with subscriptions over the next few days with Glu Mobile being one of the first with Frontline Commando.

"We're using Google Play subscriptions to offer consumers a compelling value and a single currency which they can use across Glu’s most popular titles," said Niccolo de Masi, CEO of Glu Mobile.
