Google Play Store hits 15 billion app downloads

Still playing catch-up with Apple

Google’s Play Store has reached the 15 billion app download milestone.

The landmark number was apparently reached yesterday, according to the Telegraph. However, a spokesperson for Google told TechCrunch that it actually happened "a few weeks ago".

Either way, the number has been reached and the first announced since the name change from Android Market in March. The Play Store has seen four billion downloads since Google announced the 11 billion milestone back in January.

The Google Play Store is a combined shop for apps, books and movies which can be downloaded for Android powered smartphones and tablets.

For comparison Apple’s App Store passed 25 billion downloads in March and celebrated with a competition giving the lucky app buyer a an Apple gift card worth $10,000.

Apple is still leading in terms of the selection of apps on offer in its store for iPhone, iPod and iPad. It reportedly has more than 580,000 apps compared to Google’s 450,000.
