Google launches Google Play combined content store

A one-stop shop for all of Google’s multimedia services

Google has launched Google Play, a combined content store for a number of its services including the Android Market.

In the US, the cloud-based one-stop shop includes movies, music, apps, games and books. In Blighty the service will offer movies, books and Android apps.

Google said, "Today we’re eliminating all that hassle [of multiple stores, moving files and syncing] with Google Play, a digital entertainment destination where you can find, enjoy and share your favourite music, movies, books and apps on the web and on your Android phone or tablet."

The Android Market website has already seen the change but the upgrade will happen on smartphones and tablets “over the coming days”.

The firm said that Google Play 20,000 music tracks, more than 450,000 Android apps and games, the world’s largest selection of eBooks and thousands of movies.

The cloud part of Google Play means that any content your purchase is available online across your devices whenever you want to access it, provided you have some kind of internet access. Content such as movies can also be downloaded for offline viewing instead of using the cloud.

Where applicable, depending on country, the movies, books and music apps will be upgraded and renamed Google Play Movies, Google Play Books and Google Play Music. Google said the roll out starts today.
