Sony's Playstation 3 (PS3) is the most energy hungry games console, according to a survey by an Australian magazine.

Choice Magazine surveyed how much is costs to run various electrical goods constantly for a year, and the PS3 came out as five times more expensive than a fridge. According to the research a PS3 costs around £123 to run for a year (in Australia) compared to roughly £24 for a fridge.

An Xbox 360 costs £99 to run for a year while the Wii was the cheapest console to run using just £11 worth of energy.

The survey also highlighted that an Apple iMac with a built-in display consumes just two-thirds of the energy used by a standard PC without a monitor.

Choice Magazine's Christopher Zinn from said: "While we hope no one actually leaves their games console on for a whole year 24/7, the figures are indicative of just how much electricity these small devices can chew their way through."
