The space combat genre has been keeping a low profile for quite a while now. Titles such as the X series on PC have enjoyed some success by incorporating adventure, trade and exploratory elements, but it's been a very long time since we played a high-profile title that is entirely combat-focused like the classics Wing Commander, Freespace or X-Wing.
Texan developer Seamless Entertainment hopes to change all that with their upcoming title SOL: Exodus. The game promises space-based dogfighting and capital ship battles against planetary backdrops evocative of "iconic sci-fi TV shows and movies," according to the team.
Seamless Entertainment is an independent studio, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have considerable development chops. Studio leads Dan Magaha and Chris Stockman have, between them, worked for 2K, Firaxis, NCSoft and THQ. Stockman also worked on 2000's Bruce Campbell-starring Tachyon: The Fringe, so he has experience in the genre.
"It's not just a coincidence that this project is coming together in Austin, where the Wing Commander series was born back in the 1990s," said Magaha, studio director. "Austin has really become a hub for determined indie developers. I think we've got some of that maverick personality in this team; we're just driven by the goal of making this game great."
Details are very thin on the ground right now -- we don't even know what platforms the game is coming out for, yet, though you can bet PC will be one of them. Watch out for SOL: Exodus in the fall of this year.
