Boulder Dash was one of the best games of the 80s, featuring a very early example of a video game character who exuded genuine personality. Rockford's wide-eyed blinking and impatient foot-tapping endeared him to the earliest generation of gamers, and helped make his debut game a memorable title. The fact that it played well -- and still plays well today -- certainly helped, too.

Developer Catnip Games recently released an updated version on Xbox Live Arcade in collaboration with the game's original creator First Star Software?. It was received warmly by critics, showing that there's still a market for puzzling, digging and trying not to get squished by big rocks.

As a result, the updated Boulder Dash XL is coming to iOS, Android and Windows Phone 7 devices, courtesy of mobile development veterans HeroCraft. It'll be in the palm of our hands come the 2011 holiday season.

"We're huge fans of the original Boulder Dash and are thrilled that we have the opportunity to bring this game up to date with stunning new graphics for the latest cutting edge smartphones and tablets," said Alexey Sazonov, sales and marketing director for HeroCraft.
