Here's a nice Friday morning treat: Rockstar Games has compiled playlists featuring music from the entire Grand Theft Auto series. Grand Theft Auto's radio stations have always been an iconic part of the series, lending a concrete sense of place and time to a series that excels at creating exaggerated facsimiles of Americana. "
The playlists are "free" if you've got a Spotify account, though you'll of course have to deal with the occasional advertisement. The tracks are available to purchase on iTunes, which will cost you a pretty penny. They tracks have always been available (fans have been constructing playlists of their own for years), but these "official" playlists promise to be the most complete collection, and Rockstar has promised to keep the playlists updated as more tracks surface.
I for one have lost count of the hours I've spent cruising idly through the streets of Liberty City or San Andreas, radio blaring while I hunted for hidden locales or took in the sights. The excellent talk radio stations that have appeared in most of the games are missing, but here's hoping Rockstar makes those available someday.
And here's a neat bonus that I didn't know existed: The Advertising Council of Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas serves up a massive collection of the radio commercials from the Grand Theft Auto series. You can stream them from your browser, but be forewarned--these ads aren't even remotely safe for work.
