Dungeons of Dredmor programmer Nicholas Vining of Gaslamp Games has posted a lengthy blog entry on the subject of the challenges of dealing with unprecedented success. Vining's words come amid reports that the latest Dredmor patch breaks players' save games -- an issue which Vining has apologized profusely for, and has already developed a hotfix. In the meantime, you get an Achievement for suffering a crash!
"The simple fact of the matter is that we were not expecting sales in the volume that we got, and we were not expecting the response that we got," says Vining. "I honestly thought we would make maybe a thousand sales during the entire lifetime of the product. We are doing somewhat better than that, and as a result we are doing our best to try to deal with the fact that we now have to support a massive user base, with no money, no staff, and no time."
Vining admits he was "surprised" about the amount of upset over the save game issue, given that Dredmor is a permadeath game where player characters are somewhat disposable. He confesses to feeling "amazed and humbled that people are putting in monstrous amounts of time on Dungeons of Dredmor, and the stories of eighteen hour runs gone in an instant are absolutely heartbreaking." Despite the problems -- which should be removed in a new hotfix today, so don't delete those old save files yet -- Dredmor patch 1.0.3 fixes a significant number of game issues, a full list of which can be found here.
Further tweaks and updates -- including the previously-promised UI scaling and in-game leaderboards -- are coming in the 1.0.4 patch. Vining has learned the hard way that it's important to intensely test game updates, and intends to do so from now on by making use of the profits of Dredmor's success.
"As soon as we actually get royalties, we will be investing in some hardware to run automated testing and hardware compatibility checking, and we will be building this into the next game from day one so that this does not happen again," he says.
Despite its teething troubles, Dungeons of Dredmor is an excellent roguelike that is well worth your time. Grab it from Steam here.
