Wii storms ahead of PlayStation 3 in Japan

Nintendo console outsells PS3 by 5:1 margin

Nintendo’s Wii games console is outselling Sony’s PS3 (PlayStation 3) in Japan, according to Japanese research firm Enterbrain.

In a faxed statement to Bloomberg News Enterbrain, which operates a Japanese games sales chart and publishes a video game magazine, confirmed that Nintendo’s Wii sold 251,794 units in Japan throughout May. The report shows that the more expensive PlayStation 3 sold only around 50,000 units in Japan. Going by these figures, Sony’s PlayStaion 3 was outsold by the Wii by a margin of five to one.

And the gap between the two consoles is growing - the ratio of sales was four to one in favour of the Wii during April. Poor sales of the PS3 when compared with the launch sales of the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles may be due to the higher relative price of the PlayStation 3 console, and the compatibility of its software titles.

Despite such disappointing PlayStation 3 sales figures, Sony aims to ship 11 million units of the PS3 in the business year to March 2008, up from 5.5 million the previous year.

The data also showed that Nintendo’s DS was far ahead of Sony’s handheld PSP console in Japan. The DS sold 620,670 units in May compared to 123,673 PSPs.
