nVidia launches ATI-killer

nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX is a record-breaker

nVidia has begun its counter attack against ATI’s efforts to dominate the graphics market, announcing that it will release a video card that runs an average of 10 to 15 percent faster than its previous record-breaking model, the GeForce 8800 GTX.

Called the nVidia GeForce 8800 Ultra, this new GPU wields 768 MB of video memory and is also fully tuned for use with DirectX 10.

"The definitive gaming platform is built around the fastest components available and today there is no disputing those components include the GeForce 8800 Ultra GPU and an nVidia nForce 680i SLI-ready motherboard," said Ujesh Desai, nVidia's general manager of desktop GPUs. "The graphics industry evolves extremely quickly and it is quite an achievement when you can leapfrog your own performance milestones in succession like we have done with these GeForce 8 Series GPUs."

The GeForce 8800 Ultra is optimised for use with this year's DirectX 10 titles, such as Lost Planet, Crysis, Hellgate: London, Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, and many other titles coming soon for Windows Vista.
